Do you get enough beauty sleep? Is it even real? We’ve all heard of beauty sleep and while we use the term once in a while to talk about getting enough sleep, no one really talks about if beauty sleep is real and what it really means. Let’s have a talk about beauty sleep, the advantages of beauty sleep, and how you can make sure you’re getting enough quality beauty sleep.
Beauty sleep is a term we’ve all heard before, but is beauty sleep a real thing? Can getting beauty sleep really make you look, or feel, more beautiful? According to researchers, people who miss out on sleep can actually appear less attractive to others. In a sleep experiment, it was found that restricted sleep can have negative effects on facial appearance and social appeal. It’s common to think that people who look tired are less approachable and better to be avoided.
So it seems that yes, beauty sleep is a real thing! Getting “beauty sleep” can make you more attractive and appealing to others. If simply getting more sleep can do that, then why not? We often hear about all the ways that we can improve our appearance with different products, surgeries, etc. but for those of us who prioritize natural living, sleeping more and looking better sounds great.
While the exact definition of “beauty sleep” is a bit vague, we can basically assume that it means getting enough deep sleep to feel well rested and for our bodies to do all the repair that happens during sleep.
This means that you get to sleep earlier in the evening before you’re over tired, you sleep well through the night, and you wake up feeling refreshed and energized. Restricting sleep by not going to bed on time, or having problems getting to sleep and staying asleep, will take away from your beauty sleep and the positive effects that beauty sleep can have on your appearance.
It’s pretty common knowledge that sun damage can make skin look older and less appealing. When you’re sleep deprived your skin has a harder time recovering from environmental stressors such as sun damage. To counter this, getting enough beauty sleep will ensure that your body is able to repair itself and reduce the signs of aging.
Puffiness generally comes from edema build up around the eyes. This is a fancy way of saying that there’s fluid buildup around the eyes. Inadequate sleep as well as fatigue can cause this and make the appearance of eye puffiness much more prominent. To aid in this, you can try to spend most of your time sleeping on your back with your head elevated to encourage proper fluid drainage.
Now we know beauty sleep can truly have some positive effects and that lack of beauty sleep can have some negative effects on our appearance. The key to beauty sleep is really getting the right amount of relaxing, quality sleep each night. But it’s not always that easy, so here are some tips for encouraging and enhancing your beauty sleep.
If you want to have a good night of relaxing sleep, you can start a bedtime routine that promotes relaxation before bed. Of course, what you want to do to relax is up to you. One idea would be to do some gentle bedtime yoga with an aromatherapy candle burning. Follow that up with applying some soothing Rosemary and Lavender Goat Milk Lotion or luxurious Rosemary Lavender Whipped Body Body before turning in for the night. These relaxation routines before bed may help you get to sleep faster and promote better quality sleep through the night.
You may have heard that one hour before midnight is worth two hours after midnight. This simply means that the sleep you get earlier in the evening is going to benefit you more than if you stay up late and sleep in. The right time is going to be different for everyone, but earlier is almost always better. It may take some time to figure out the best time for you, but a good time to aim for is around 9pm to 10pm. Then you can always push it earlier or later based on how you feel.
It seems that beauty sleep really just means getting enough relaxing sleep that your body can feel refreshed and do all of the restorative tasks it naturally does at night. As natural living advocates we love to be able to suggest ways to enhance your life, your appearance, and your self esteem naturally, like by simply getting more sleep.
