With the arrive of our newest limited edition goat milk soap Frankincense and Spice, we thought we'd dive into exactly what Frankincense is. We've heard it for years associated with the Christmas Story and the Three Wise Men in the Bible, but what is it, what can it be used for, and where does it come from?
What Is Frankincense?
Frankincense, which is also known as olibanum, is a resin (or dried sap) that comes from the trunk of the Boswellia tree. These trees usually grow in dry and mountainous regions of Africa, India, and the Middle East. The tree bark is cut open, and sap leaks out, which is then left to harden and then scraped off of the tree. It can be used dry, or it can be steamed to make essential oil.
Benefits of Frankincense
Frankincense is known to have many benefits and uses, dating back for centuries. It is anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antiseptic. Those properties alone have so many uses! It is also a natural astringent. Because of all of these, it is often used in skin-care products for aging skin, blemishes, and promoting our body's natural healing processes. It can also be found in hair products as it helps scalp health and soothes the hair follicle.
How To Use Frankincense
Typically, it is the Frankincense essential oil that is used in various skin-care products such as soap, lotion, and serums. It also comes in the form of supplements that have other benefits, but before you take them you should consult with your health care provider.
Frankincense has a lot of uses and could be beneficial to add to some of your routines. With it's scent of musty pine notes, along with citrus notes and spicy undertones, it's a great holiday smell and will leave you feeling cozy and calm, and ready to take on this busy season!
