There are many skincare products available, and with more and more options coming out, it's hard to know just how and when to use all of them. Today we're sharing the best way to layer on skincare products in order to get the optimal benefits of each of them. In coming blog posts we'll talk about differences between products and which ones might be best for your skin, but today we'll just focus on general products. We're also leaving out the step of cleansing (always do that first!).
Lightest to Heaviest
The general rule is to apply your products from lightest to heaviest. This way those thinner products will be able to penetrate into your skin more easily. Start with a toner, and then add on your serums. There are many serums out there, but one that is most commonly recommended is a Vitamin C serum. Our Facial Serum contains Vitamin C and other vitamins and antioxidants, as well as Hyaluronic Acid. (We think it's pretty great :) )
Then add your spot treatments and eye creams. After you've treated your skin to serums and spot treatments, you can layer on your moisturizer. (If your skin is sensitive however, it might be good practice to layer on a thin moisturizer before you use your serums!)
Daytime and Nighttime Differences
Your next step, after a moisturizer, is your retinoid treatment, heavier cream, facial oil or sunscreen.
It's important to use sunscreen, or at the very least, a product with SPF, every morning. Yes, even in the winter! Protecting your skin from the sun's rays will benefit your skin in the long run and keep your skin from aging as quickly.
If you're using a retinoid treatment, now is the time to use it as well.
Facial oil is a great last step, especially for your night routine. Oils can easily penetrate through moisturizers, but most won't be able to get through oil, so use it as the last step. And since oils can make your face appear greasy or shiny, using it at night allows it to do its magic while you sleep!
Create Your Own Routine
Of course, you don't have to use all of the products we've mentioned above. There are many options out there, and it's important to find what works for you. A basic routine should always include a cleanser, a moisturizer, and a sunscreen. Beyond that, it's up to you! If you're worried about adding things to your routine, set up an appointment with a dermatologist and see what they recommend!
