This is going out to our best and most loyal customers first as your opinion is the most important to us. We need your help with an important decision our company is making in the coming months.
As some of you are aware, last year we made our farm and business 100% solar powered in an effort to go green and make a contribution to bettering our planet. Over the years we have also been making changes to our product packaging. This includes using 100% recyclable materials. Even the paper we put inside the packages we ship to you is recycled, and we reuse packaging whenever possible to further cut down on waste.
However, a lot of the new products we've been selling use plastic bottles, especially our liquid products. Using all this plastic has been making us feel extremely guilty, and we're looking for ways to cut down on the amount of plastic we use and send out. Although the plastic can be recycled, much of it eventually ends up degrading and turning into micro-plastic, which is killing our oceans and hurting wildlife. We need to stop using as much plastic as possible, immediately.
We have some options that we would like your opinion and advice on. We are exploring using glass or aluminum bottles for our lotions, body wash, and hair care products. Both have pros and cons.
Glass is heavier, which means it takes MUCH more energy to move it, and that gives it a higher carbon footprint, putting out 10x more carbon pollution during shipping. It also takes more energy to make a glass bottle, also increasing its carbon footprint. The sand used to make glass can sometimes come from the ocean floor, which is destructive to wildlife. Finally, glass can break, which means products in transport and in your home could end up shattering, destroying the product and potentially hurting people. Having said that, glass is almost 100% recyclable, and recycling glass bottles generally takes less energy than recycling aluminum.
Aluminum is 4 times the cost of plastic, and twice the cost of glass, but is the most recycled material in the world. Its extremely light to ship which means less fuel during transportation, and takes less energy to produce than glass. It isn't as fragile as glass, but it can dent and ding pretty easily if dropped or jostled around in shipping. It can be recycled an infinite number of times, but can take more energy to recycle than glass.
We've also looked into bio-plastics, however the technology seems to still be developing and right now they don't seem to actually be better for the environment than aluminum or glass. Some options, such as sugarcane bottles, are gimmicky.
THANK YOU FOR PARTICIPATING IN OUR SURVEY - IT IS NOW CLOSED. 1000 customers were polled and overwhelmingly voted to replace our plastic lotion, body wash and shampoo bottles with aluminum. We will be removing all 9 ounce lotion bottles and upgrading to 18 ounce aluminum ones. This will increase the cost of the product but you will paying for a larger quantity AND helping us get rid of all the plastic waste. We will continue using glass for all our body butter and salve products. We expect these changes to happen before summer 2020.
As always, thank you for being our customer and for supporting all our efforts.
