So you’ve decided to live a cleaner lifestyle and reduce your carbon footprint! As more people become aware of the negative impact we are having on the earth, it has become an increasingly popular choice to personally make changes in our own lives to reduce our negative impacts as individuals, families, and businesses.
There are plenty of ways to live a cleaner lifestyle and work towards lessening your carbon footprint, some of the best to start with are below.
Buy Quality Products
One of the most effective ways to reduce our carbon footprint is to buy quality products that are made to last so that you’re not buying 5, 10, or even 20 of them over your lifetime.
For example, a cheap blender that needs to be replaced every two years ends up in a landfill every two years. One that is better quality is likely to cost a bit more but can last 10 or 20 years. When you focus on quality, you’re ensuring that you’re buying products that are made to last rather than continually having to throw them out.

Quality can also mean products that are made with superior materials. Plastic is awful for the environment, while wood is better, and bamboo is even better than that with the latter two requiring much less energy to produce. Doing your research on the types of materials that will reduce your carbon footprint for the products you buy can point you in the right direction.
Shop Local and Small
Shopping with local businesses can greatly reduce your carbon footprint when compared to shopping from stores that have to ship your items a long distance.
Shopping small can help too because shopping small means that they are generally producing items in small batches and are hands-on with the product, rather than a large company using large amounts of resources for production.

As a small business, we are very conscious of our carbon footprint and our goat milk products are made in small batches with eco friendly materials and made right here with happy goats.
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
We’ve all heard it before, but as we get more used to convenience and disposable items it can be harder to commit to. Advertising is at an all-time high trying to convince you to buy more.
On top of that many products that are available for purchase aren’t of lasting quality. Reducing simply means buying less or using less, this is a conscious decision that we can make about the purchases we make that we know we don’t really need, but that we want.
Everything made takes up resources and for every item you don’t buy, you’re lessening your carbon footprint. Of course, when it comes to an item wearing out then it’s your job to reuse it (for example an old t-shirt into a cleaning rag) or recycle an item that can’t be reused.
Focus on Local and Seasonal Food
For those who aren’t gardeners, this can be a harder concept to grasp. Simply put, produce is grown during certain seasons and is hard to grow outside of those seasons causing it to require more resources.
Alternatively, it might be in season somewhere else and may have to come a long way, increasing its carbon footprint. When you focus on seasonal food, you’re making a point to shop and cook with produce that is in season where you live.

Living a cleaner lifestyle is enhanced even more if you’re able to shop locally. Local farm stands or farmers markets often carry food that is local so it hasn’t had to travel far to get to you which means its carbon footprint is much lower than something that has to travel across the country to get to you.
Living a cleaner lifestyle is an admirable goal, but it’s ok to acknowledge that making the changes may take some time. Making progress is much better than trying to be perfect from the beginning as there’s always another step you can take. By being more conscious of the concepts listed above, you can work to reduce your carbon footprint.
