Headaches are quite literally, a pain. When you’re suffering from a headache it can be hard to get anything done and impossible to relax. If you’re prone to headaches, but don’t immediately want to pop an over the counter medication there are some things that you can try.
One effective way you can soothe your headache is with a shower. A relaxing, warm shower can truly soothe a headache and help lessen or get rid of your pain. Try the tips outlined below to see if this is something you can add to your list of remedies to try when you’re struggling with a bad headache.
How can showering help soothe a headache?
Showers can be used as a form of heat therapy that is especially helpful for tension headaches. The reason is that a warm shower can stop pain signals from traveling to the brain and increase blood flow which can help to relax muscles.
There are also additional steps you can take in your shower to help soothe your headache, like using beneficial essential oils and simply allowing your body to relax.
How to soothe your headache in the shower:
When you’re trying to get rid of a bad headache in the shower, you’re not going to be showering the same way you would when you’re trying to get ready for the day. The focus is going to be on relaxing your body and allowing the shower to relieve your headache pain. Here are some things to focus on when you’re trying to get rid of a headache.
Dim The Lights
While it may be uncomfortable showering in the dark, try dimming the lights in your shower or bathroom. Depending on how your bathroom is lit, this could be done by turning off the lights and cracking the blinds so just a little bit of light is shining through. If that doesn’t quite work for your bathrooms layout try to make it so that your shower isn’t brightly lit, but that you can still see for safety.
Maybe you can completely turn off the lights but keep some relaxing candles burning. (Plus the scents may also help relieve your headache!)

Keep It Warm
A warm shower is usually hot enough to help relieve your headache, but not so hot that it could burn you. The warm water is soothing which will help your whole body to relax and it also increases blood flow. The increase in blood flow can help with pain because it sends more oxygen, proteins and other nutrients to the area(s) in pain.
Try to let the water hit those spots that feel the most tense. Slowly you should feel your muscles loosen up and your pain fade away.

Add Soothing Essential Oils
There are a lot of different ways that you can add essential oils to your shower to aid in relieving your headache. Lavender, peppermint and rosemary oil are some of the most popular essential oils to help with headaches.
One of the easiest ways to incorporate essential oils into your shower is to use hair care products that already have essential oils in them like our Herbal Goat Milk Conditioner or Lavender Goat Milk Soap which both contain lavender, a soothing essential oil known to aid in relaxation and pain relief.

Give Yourself A Head Massage
A good head massage can really help with a headache and this is something you can try while you’re in the shower. When shampooing your hair you can gently massage all over your head to help relieve some of the pressure. Everyone is different, but we find focusing on your temples and the middle of your forehead make the biggest impact.
Additionally, there are some specific massage techniques you can try. One head massage technique for a tension headache is to put your index and middle fingers from both hands at the base of your skull on either side of your spine. Spend 30 seconds drawing small circles and slowly tilt your head from side to side.

Additional tips if the shower didn’t help:
● Drink some water: A very common cause of headaches is dehydration so drinking a big glass of water over the course of 15 or 20 minutes can help.
● Take a nap: If you can manage to fall asleep and are able to take a nap, your headache could be much better when you wake up.
● Try acupressure points: There are certain acupressure points that may help relieve pain from a headache. Once you find these points you can try putting pressure on them to help with your headache.
Struggling to get through your day with a headache is far from pleasant. There are plenty of remedies that you can try and taking a warm, soothing shower is one of the most effective for finding relief.
