Vanilla is a classic scent that most everyone loves. It generally has a calming effect, and that got us wondering, are there other benefits of vanilla? And what exactly are they? Today we'll share what we found - you might be surprised at just how many benefits come from that sweet vanilla scent.
What is Vanilla?
Interestingly, vanilla is a spice. A vanilla “bean” is actually the fruit of orchids in the genus Vanilla and vanilla extract is created by soaking the bean in an alcohol solution. That extract is what is usually used in cooking.
You can also find a vanilla absolute, oleoresin, or CO2 extract, which is what is usually sold by essential oil companies. It's not technically an essential oil, since it cannot be extracted using distillation or expression. But these different types vanilla are what are generally used in beauty products, as well as used aromatically (in a diffuser, for example).

Benefits of Ingesting Vanilla
Vanilla has a surprising number of benefits when you ingest vanilla extract. Vanilla has very high levels of antioxidants, which can help stimulate the body’s natural regrowth. It’s also good for your heart, since it has been shown that vanilla can reduce cholesterol levels. Drinking vanilla herbal tea might also help you with digestion, and may soothe gut inflammation and help give you relief from other digestion problems.

Benefits of Using Vanilla Topically
Diffusing and smelling vanilla "oil" can have a calming effect and help reduce stress and anxiety. It's also great for your hair as it can strengthen the hair and also induce blood flow to the scalp for better hair growth. Who knew? And lastly, because it has antibacterial properties, it can help fight breakouts. Amazing! (If you think you need some of these benefits in your life, be sure to check out our Madagascar Vanilla Soap and our Amber Vanilla Body Butter. They smell so good!)
